It’s not what you got but what you give

This is a lyric from a song of the same name by the band, Tesla. It has resonated with me for years. In leaving Los Angeles and putting that chapter to rest, I had a life coach tell me about this system by Tony Robbins. Tony teaches that people usually fall into one of four categories in terms of what most influences their behavior and choices: variety, certainty, love and connection, or significance. Myself, after a lot of introspection, I love certainty, a lot of certainty.
But when we start talking about purpose and passion, two other needs become especially interesting: growth and contribution.
In leaving Los Angeles, I coached myself about where I wanted to live and what I wanted to do based on these 6 categories. And this quote embodies the growth and contribution area. It truly is not what you got but what you give.
Maybe purpose isn’t ultimately about what we accumulate, accomplish, or even discover about ourselves. Maybe the question becomes: what are we going to do with what we’ve been given?
